Looking back: Pololu Valley 1937

I don’t recall seeing this photo before. I came across a good scan while digging into the hard drive on my sister’s laptop. It was lucky that I wrote down the laptop’s password soon after she died in 2016. I had a list of possible passwords, and figured it out by trial and error.

My sister recorded the caption. It reads: “Helen Yonge and mule Nawahe in Pololu Valley 1937.”

Pololu Valley in the Kohala mountains. I recall my mother telling of spending time there in the summers with friends from school.

I wish I had listened more carefully and retained more of the story. Who was she with? She had graduated from the University of Hawaii in 1935, and was working as an instructor in Home Economics. I wish I knew why the mule was named “Nawahe.”

Lots of “I wish” thoughts. One interesting picture of my mom on a mule.

Ian: my wife and I hiked down the trail about two years ago, short but steep, and there is a great black sand beach, and a lot of people there with kids enjoying the beach, but not crowded or anything. Not much parking topside. Go there if you get the chance.
