The 4th of July midweek holiday provides a good excuse to just slow way down this week.
We did our 3-miles on the beach this morning. I’ve had a couple of cups of coffee, decaf only, and some good cherries. Oh, a home grown apple banana from friends in Kaaawa.
Duke is down on the floor next to my chair, pawing at my leg for some reason. He’s already had breakfast, a spoonful of plain yogurt, and his insulin shot. Oh, he’s standing next to the squirt bottle I use from time to time when Romeo gets a little too demanding. Romeo, by the way, has already been out for a 5-minute walk with his new harness and leash. He spent most of the time rolling on the warm deck, then trying to run under the house, only to find out that the harness and leash have a purpose. After we came back in, I tried to read the day’s news, but it’s far too depressing.
So I’m just going to add a placeholder here, a photo of one of the latest additions to our morning dogs list. He’s learned very quickly, I must say. I still can’t recall his name and will have to ask again, but he’s said to be a beagle-shepherd mix. When he was a puppy, he looked like a normal size dog zipping around on short little legs. But as he has grown up, his proportions have improved. He’s now quite handsome.

Okay, just to let you know, after reading about your harness idea, I went to Petland and bought one – cheap enough in case I was wasting my time/money. I actually got it on Kulia, we went outside, he lay there immobile. No amount of prodding could move him. Second time he walked around a little, very tentatively – not sure why, he usually bolts on the rare occasion that he escapes. As long as he lets me put the harness on I’ll keep taking him out, would be cool if he actually gets to a point of walking normally, so thanks for the idea. And congrats on the SPJ award! Very cool.
What a handsome dog! btw- for recalcitrant cats who insist on lounging on my desk, I have a can of compressed air -the kind used to remove dust from electronics- after the first few sprays, all I have to do is reach for the can and they scoot away.
I love this pic. Reminds me of my departed’s brother. She was the middle of 3 at birth. Her older brother Kepa looked just like this guy. The younger, Chino, looked just like her: white with a few brown patches. It was hard to tell them apart sometimes. They were born across the street and except M, all still live there. The girl who raised them as puppies called Mija and Chino twins. And it was close.
Until I knew this litter I never knew that dogs from the same litter could have different fathers, but Kepa had to have. They were just too different. We knew Mija and Chino were part Beagle, but Luna, the mom, is solid brown. Except for his mask, Kepa is solid black, so it was hard to know what those two might be, except by the face.
Looking at this guy I now know Luna carries the beagle and the shepherd must have come through Kepa’s dad. We guessed that, but now I know. We thought Mija and Chino’s dad wa probably white, and that he was probably the beautiful white furry guy that stays tied up a few doors down.
We also knew she and Chino were part beagle. But we weren’t sure if that was from Luna or if we were wrong about the father. So now I know. Kepa has to be part beagle so Luna’s part beagle and the 2nd dad is the beautiful white boy on the corner They’re all really smart, very sweet animals.
I love poi dogs and half breeds. They’re such good animals. Maybe not as handsome as pure breds. But they’re so smart and interesting – at least to a geneticist.
