Wouldn’t you know it! I should have been there, but wasn’t.
We had a scheduling conflict and so didn’t attend Friday night’s annual dinner where the Hawaii Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists presented its Excellence in Journalism Awards.
Awards were given for work published by local journalists during 2017 in a variety of categories encompassing different print, online, and broadcast media.
Judging this year was done by the Louisville SPJ chapter, and the Hawaii chapter, in turn, judged Louisville’s contest.
I finally got around to checking the results, and got this pleasant surprise!

I was surprised (and yet, maybe not) that the Star-Advertiser was not mentioned at all. Kudos to the Maui News and Civil Beat for cleaning up.
The SA hasn’t participated in these “awards” since the merger of the two papers I believe. Nor have the other 3 daily newspapers in the state. That’s been nearly 8 years now. Surprised you only noticed now. I was told by a friend there that it would be like playing checkers by yourself……..and we all know you are not supposed to crown your own kings.
