Nicknames give a flavor of Hawaii

One of my parents’ old photos showed a small gathering for a BBQ with a pig roasting over a fire out in the yard. I was looking for the identify of a man identified in the caption simply as “Ox”.

That led me to this great bit of Hawaiiana, a list of nicknames of Outrigger Canoe Club members prior to 1964, with some going way back.

Here’s how they introduce the list.

It seems like everybody had a nickname in the early days of the Outrigger Canoe Club. Paul Dolan, a member of the Historical Committee compiled a list of these nicknames for individuals who were members of the OCC, as well as those beachboys and other prominent persons in Waikiki prior to 1964. Enjoy!

And what a list!

Here are a few nicknames from the start of the list. You’ll have to use the link above to learn who these nicknames referred to, and to browse through all of the rest.

Thanks to Outrigger’s historians for compiling this bit of old Hawaii.
