Honolulu Marathon 2019

The Honolulu Marathon is being run today, December 8, 2019.

The course brings all the runners past our house, which is located somewhere between mile 22 and 23.

Today the first elite runner came into view at 6:47. Titus Ekiru of Kenya was one his way to another record-breaking finish, with an unofficial time of 2:07:59.

Here he is, passing our house earlier this morning.

Honolulu Marathon’s sirens and choppers shut down East Honolulu every year at the expense of residents. The waste stream by 25,000 runners is huge and needs reducing.

Helicopters hovering over homes should be replaced by drones. Our community cant leave their homes and give up the roads every year. The marathon should share funds directly to the impacted community. Our roads, sewers, schools and community organizations could all use those funds!

I think, the Honolulu Marathon is a good day to stay home. The helicopter comment reminds me of me, but on another matter and that is immigration. If I ever felt contrary to immigration all that stopped the day I bought oranges and a drink from a street vendor in Las Vegas. The seller that day spoke no English. Yet, no better treatment can be had. After that day, I now support open borders. Then a Russian crew installed my flooring in one day. Sweating all day and working into the dark. Good grief, normally that’s a two-week job. Yes, I’d done it before. I have always supported the Honolulu Marathon since I ran it in 1981 along with my wife Evelyn, who incidentally beat me by about 90 minutes. It’s no use suggesting the writer Kai run the marathon if only the first mile which is a wonderous event and I ask that all in Honolulu support the day of the Marathon as I certainly will always do. There is something very local and happy about a world-class event and the winner this year passing by Ian Lind’s home gave me chicken skin. Again, thank you, Ian.

The country of origin of the racers is not the issue. The Honolulu Marathon organizers simply must improve. They have a Japan office yet don’t visit the our own neighborhood boards. Motorcycles roaring through at 5am should be replaced with bicycles for pacers and cops . Much quieter and safer. Same with the helicopters buzzing over homes. Use drones.

We also need a plastic-free marathon. The majority of marathon waste is trucked to the Westside and toxically burned. Plastic gels, bags and water bottles from the race enter our waterways and flow to the ocean.
