Veteran reporter almost falls for online scam

Earlier this month, I described an email from a friend that struck me as suspicious, and how I was able to confirm it was part of a scam.

Now veteran reporter Denby Fawcett has described how she was almost taken in by the very same scammer (Denby Fawcett: How I Almost Fell For An Internet Scam).

She responded to the same email I had gotten. The scammer, posing asour friend, asked Denby to buy several iTunes gift cards and send photos of the cards and their serial numbers, promising Denby she would be reimbursed.

I was almost ready to drive to Longs to buy the card when the scammer sent me a pushy email saying, “Please let me know how soon this can be done.”

That’s when I finally realized something was wrong because Shaunagh would never be that rude when asking for a favor.

Then I did what I should have done in the first place: called Shaunagh and quickly Googled “iTunes gift cards scams.”

Turns out this is a very common scam and people fall for it because the request is from a friend they want to help.

Anyway, Denby figured it out. She also got more info on how common the scam is.

Check out her column, and forward it to friends for future reference.

Yes, even folks with very high opinions of themselves are sometimes blinded by such and subject to manipulation by the unscrupulous…
