If you like looking at old photos of familiar locations, check out the City and County of Honolulu’s Historic Photograph Collection, which features several collections of photos taken in the early to mid-1920s.
For example, here’s a view looking mauka along Punchbowl Street from the corner of King Street, taken in September 1921. On the left is the building that now houses the Hawaii State Library. It’s among a number photos of downtown Honolulu and the area around what is now the State Capitol.
Another great collection features before-and-after photos of various places in Kaimuki, taken between about 1923 and 1925 as the area was being developed with paved roads and infrastructure.
For example, here are view of Waialae Road from 15th Avenue looking up toward Koko Head Avenue. The first taken in November 1923, and the second was taken in August 1925 after the street improvements were finished.
