In Hawaii, June 11 is Kamehameha Day

From Wikipedia:

King Kamehameha I Day on June 11 is a public holiday in the U.S. state of Hawaii. It honors Kamehameha the Great, the monarch who first established the unified Kingdom of Hawaii…first proclaimed by Kamehameha V (on December 22, 1871).

And this year, June 11 is also Throwback Thursday.

I found an envelope containing old negatives among my mom’s stuff after she died at the beginning of 2013. They were photos she took as the Kamehameha Day parade passed Kawaiahao Church on its way to the Kamehameha statue in front of Aliiolani Hale back in 1957.

She took the photos from a vantage point at the corner of King Street and Punchbowl Street, in front of city hall and across from Kawaiahao. That’s an interesting view down King Street in the first photo.

Given the current spirit of reckoning with the truth of unpleasant history, is it worth remembering that Kamehameha “first established the unified Kingdom of Hawaii” largely through the particular method of bloody conquest and extermination of rival bloodlines using weapons, other technology, and advice supplied by foreigners, and thereafter ruled as a tyrant?
