The Coming COVID Eviction Crisis and How to Stop It

ZoomHawai‘i residents have long struggled with the elevated cost of housing and high rates of homelessness. Now the COVID-19 recession is pressing more households to the edge. Join us to explore the connections between poverty and housing policy and to find out what we can do to prevent a surge of evictions.
Princeton sociologist Matthew Desmond is the author of four books, including Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City, which won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award. An expert on housing, economic inequality, and public policy, he is a contributing writer for the New York Times Magazine and a MacArthur “Genius” fellow. Desmond directs The Eviction Lab, which is tracking housing and eviction patterns in cities across the country during the pandemic.
Desmond will be interviewed by Colin Moore, director of UH’s Public Policy Center.
