1966: The Miske brothers and the Kennedy family

This just goes in the “Useless but interesting information” file.

In the summer of 1966, Jackie Kennedy, the widow of President John F. Kennedy, spent the summer at a home on Kahala Beach with her children, Caroline (age 8) and John Jr. (age 5).

What does this have to do with anything going on here today?

Well, it seems that the Kennedy kids met and befriended three brothers on the beach in Kahala. They were the Miske brothers, Gary, Michael, and Tommy. Michael would grow up to have a son, Michael John Miske, Jr., who is now in federal detention in Honolulu awaiting trial on charges of racketeering, drug dealing, kidnapping, murder, and more.

For that one idyllic summer, they played on a world stage without realizing it.

Here’s a brief excerpt from the 2014 book, The Good Son, by Christopher Andersen.

This passage mistakenly says the children were playing on the beach in Wailea, which should instead have referred to “Waialae.”

There are a lot of photographs taken during that trip available online. I looked at some, hoping to find the Miske boys. I was not successful.

Click to enlarge the print just a bit.

    Ian;

    Please, enough about the Miskes. They have had their 15 minutes of fame and don’t need any more publicity. I don’t think that they are very high on anyones give a damn list right now.

    I received the following comment from Gary Miske who, in 1966, was a 14-year old who joined his brothers playing with John and Caroline Kennedy on the beach in Kahala.

    This is his description of what took place.

    Aloha. Our family was raised in kahala on Hunakai st adjacent to kahala beach. FYI. Peter Lawford the Hollywood actor and his two children, Sidney and Chris, were part of the Kennedy ontourage on vacation. The Kennedy family stayed at the Dominick estate home on kahala ave The lawfords resided at the Kahala Hilton Hotel. After swimming at the beach in front of the Dominick estate and encountering. John John Caroline Sidney and Chris. and actually. Playing splashing talking and exchanging names. We did get asked to shore by secret servicemen. Who first asked us our names where we live and the ultimate question. “ Do you realize who your playing with”. Of course we replied no. We were told who they are. And we went. WOW. But then we’re allowed to continue playing under their supervision . The Kennedy kids were called to the house for lunch and they requested to secret service they wanted us to join them. John asked to the agents to get their moms permission. She came to the edge of the yard becomes our presence. Asked who we were. And proceeded to invite us to join them. After that amazing encounter we were invited back the next day. But not before secret service came to our home met my parents. And the next days invitation was set. For the next ten days. We’re inseparable and became. The kennedys. Their Hawaiian friends. Every day was a new adventure as we traveled in limousines just about everywhere. From daily swims at kahala Hilton to daily around the island jaunts to the mall. We were invited. To join. The Kennedy and lawford. Clan for a tour of Surfline hawaii factory. All of us were given the privilege of picking out a shirt and shorts as gifts from the owner. We spent days and eves at kahala Hilton. For swimming lunches and dinner and a luau as well. We traveled to tourist attraction. And John insisted one day that the secret service stop so we could get ice cream. We also all got invited to Kauai. For a day. And attended the luau where. John got burned. It was a ten day whirlwind of kids just being kids. And the time of our lives. We have lots of memorable photos and we’re invited to Hyannis port for a vacation to take place the following summer. Meeting Jackie Kennedy and being treated as normal children. Is something I have cherished all my life………synopsis: Children and people start off as strangers. And can become friends no matter who you are. Or who you are not.
