It’s Feline Friday, and a special one at that. It is the first FF since we brought the-cat-currently-known-as-Cali home from Aiea Heights, where she has been living since being rescued at the beginning of the month.
She is a very beatiful cat, and very sweet. She is also very spooked by the sudden transition. We brought her into the house, went in our spare bedroom, opened the door of the crate, and let her walk out. She then walked directly under the futon that’s set up as a couch, hunkered down, and let us know she is prepared to wait.
And wait she did. Although the purrs and kneads when I reach back and pet her, she has shown little interest in coming out from back there, at least not while we’re in the room. She came close once this morning, but backed away at the last minute.
However, I can attest that her bodily functions are working. She has used the litter box several times, and has emerged to eat both last night and this morning, although we didn’t witness it.
But last night I turned my little Wyze surveillance camera around to point back into the room, and the camera (with its infrared light) caught her coming out and exploring the room and adjoining bathroom, making the rounds several times before jumping up on the futon and checking the two windows. It seems the infrared also attracted every little gnat that’s hiding in there!
Anyway, on her second round, she had a little “accident.” She tried to jump up to the window sill of the small window that looks out at our front door, formerly one of Annie’s favorite spots. But Cali hit the camera, and cat + camera came crashing down. I discovered it this morning. Hopefully it won’t deter her from continuing to explore.
In the meantime, here are three Feline Friday photos. First, Cali in that safe zone behind the futon. Then a close-up so you can see what a beautiful calico she is. And, finally, a shot of Romeo, who has taken up a command post in the hallway outside the closed door to Cali’s room. I’ll add the video below, after the photos!
She’s been here for barely 24 hours. So far, so good.
We’re still considering the whole name thing. Cali is a pretty good name. Someone suggested that every Romeo deserves his Juliet, so we have considered the name “Juli.” But we’re trying to withhold judgement until we have more direct experience of her personality. We’ll see.
And here’s the video from Cali’s first night with us.

Precious!!
Ian cute stories. I guess you are well-versed in introducing new cats to your home and to other resident cats. When we adopted a kitten Bubu to keep our Kiki company, we kept him in a bedroom for about a month to let them play under the doors, and get used to each other’s scent. Bubu pretty much spent days under the bed and gradually got out to play with toys and explore before we let them face to face. They are now “best buds”. I read that not all cats get along with each other.
Romeo suddenly looks 10 years younger. ?
Yes,he actually is looking really good since Duke’s departure. I think Duke was competing to eat the food of two cats, and Romeo got the short end of things. Now he is eating well and has gained a little weight, too.
Cali is a beauty. It could take a little time (you’ve done this before) but Romeo and Cali should settle down together, eventually. You might need to keep the door closed between them for a little while for both their sakes. My husband and I have had countless adoptions and have added kitty members to our kitty family for years. It always worked out introducing a new member. We have always had 3 indoor kitties together. Currently we have 4 kitties. In April, we adopted a dog from our neighborhood that need to be rehomed and this, too, has worked out very well. Our dog was quickly instructed by our most senior kitty who is in charge (the kitty of course) and they all get along wonderfully from day one. Over the years, we have had many weeks of closing doors to separate a newbie kitty until the hissing and fuss wore down….and it always did. All the best with beautiful Cali and that Romeo is quite a looker — I enjoy his photos.
Congratulations, Ian!
She’s an absolute doll!
She’s a beauty! I had a calico cat as a kid her name was Terry such a sweetie. In Japan calicos are the symbol of fortune. Romeo looks very alert hope they become good friends.
I just love calico cats. She is a real beauty. Do you know how old she is?
Not really. I’m hoping our vet will be able to give us a better idea.
Hmm – how is Romeo reacting? One of my cat companions is welcoming to new kitties. “Uncle Billy” grooms them and kindly establishes himself as alpha; the others, not at all- hissing, growling and slaps ensue. Cali is beautiful and I hope the transition is successful.
She has beauty marks on her muzzle just like my Barabbas (Abby). She may not realize it yet but she’s a lucky girl. Let the stories begin…
As a civil libertarian, I think the camera violates Cali’s expectation of privacy. I think she’s entitled to full and just compensation…perhaps, a nice tall cat condo overlooking the window with a view.
She already has two cat condos with window views, one on each side of the house. Front yard view and back yard view.
