We are halfway through Week #7 since the day we met The-Cat-Now-Known-As-Kali and brought her home to join our feline-centric household. It’s been an adventure. And the adventure continues.
Here’s an example of the little encounters that occur several times each day with varying outcomes. This morning, it was a positive result.
It started in Kali’s “safe” room, the room where she stayed for the first week or so with us. It has become her safe spot, where she feels most comfortable. The complicating factor is that before Kali arrived, Romeo spent at least part of each day sleeping on the futon. And as soon as we started letting Kali roam the house, Romeo picked up where he left off, sleeping in her room.
This morning, Romeo was on the futon. And of all the possible places Kali could play with her catnip toy, she chose a spot directly under Romeo. I went to grab a camera as soon as I saw the scene.
When I returned with camera, Kali surprised all of us, including herself. She jumped up onto the futon and found herself face-to-face with Romeo. What happened next surprised me!
Kali’s most frequent response when finding herself (or puts herself) in this kind of position is to let out a little hiss, lunge and flail her front paws and claws in Romeo’s general direction, and then flee.
This time was different. Instead of attacking, she sat down, and then slowly stretched in Romeo’s direction.
Although they didn’t quite touch noses, Kali came pretty close before retreating to a safer distance.
At that point, I returned to the kitchen for the container of Greenies dental treats, which are wildly popular with both cats. I doled them out slowly, Kali on my left and Romeo on my right. Each waited for their next turn, somewhat patiently, until the handful I had poured out had disappeared. As I packed up and left the room, Kali jumped down to the floor and returned to her catnip toy.
And that was it. Moment over.
I declared it another positive interaction, and more evidence of slow progress.

As I can’t watch the news anymore, I LOVE your kitty kat stories! Highlight of my day. Thank you.
100% agree with you!!
It’s the ol’ play-hard-to-get routine, played with some alacrity in dating age humans….a balance between aloofness and flashes of charm.
This meeting of the felines is bordering on serial drama.
Awwwwwwwwww…they’re gonna be best buddies soon enough!!!
The adventures of Romeo and Kali have become a much anticipated part of my day…. Mahalo piha for keeping us posted and for all the photos that keep us feeling like we’re still back in Old Kahala.
Please give the Kittie Kats extra pets for me.
