Kinikini continued his nocturnal habits today, disappearing under the futon at first light this morning, then emerging to lounge atop his cat tree, but scampering back down into hiding whenever I checked on him. When I peeked in about 4 p.m., he first jumped down and hid, but when I sat and waited, he soon emerged, jumped back up to sit next to me, and then started a love-a-thon, purring, walking back and forth across me, curling up first on one side then on the other, and just generally really getting into it. And I have to report one more thing. This cat is a drooler! The more he purrs, the more he drools.

Backtracking a little…A bit after 2 a.m. this morning, I closed Romeo and Kali in our bedroom, then went down the hall and opened the door to Kini’s room. Then I just left it open and back up, inviting him to exit. And he did, without wasting any time, and charged out into the living room. This was his second late night opportunity to explore the house. He was still hyper, doing a boundary patrol at a frenetic clip, around the edges of the room several times, disappearing into the kitchen, then heading off into our pantry and laundry rooms. I’m not sure what he was exploring in there, as I couldn’t make him out in the dim light. He finally emerged, then tried two different vantage points to stand and look out towards the deck and back yard, before doing a bit more general wandering. It was right about then that I notice a darker than dark shadow on one of the living room chairs, and realized Romeo wasn’t safely in the bedroom after all. Instead, here he was sprawled out on a chair while Kinikini was making his rounds. Kini had zipped past Romeo’s chair a couple of times without pausing, and Romeo was quiet and still, not calling any attention to himself. I was feeling paranoid, though, not ready for them to meet quite yet, especially in the dark where I would have difficulty intervening if any trouble happened.
But nothing happened. After a while, Kini trotted back into his safe room and took up a position on the futon. I gave him a few more pets, fetched another scoop of kibbles to refill his empty dish, closed the door and took myself back to bed.
I expected to have a hard time going back to sleep. I was wrong.

Any chance Kini was smelling a familiar scent like Kali?
I don’t think that can be ruled out at this point.
My cat Makena was a drooler! She was a rescue and loved being loved. I think Kini is a real keeper…
Looks like Kini has designated you as Cat Dad!
