A few minutes in the spotlight

I just wanted to share this tidbit from yesterday. My story on the alleged contract to “hit” a dock union official was published overnight, and at some point I checked to see whether it had made it into Civil Beat’s “Most Popular” list, which is updated throughout the day.

It was there. At #1! I was pleased.

Then I scanned the list, and got another surprise.

#5, at the same time, was my story from last week about charges filed against Mike Miske’s longtime accountant.

That may have been the first time I have claimed two spots on the top ten list at the same time.

Reporters get to enjoy those brief moments, but it doesn’t last long. After all, the real question is, “What have you got to show for today?”

Luckily, I’m on vacation. And I’m “retired.” So no pressure from any editor to worry about, just my own drive (should I say “compulsion”) to keep fitting the pieces of the puzzle together, tell its story, and then move on to another puzzle.

There are some real benie’s to retirement, one of them being, “Sorry, can’t do that today. Find someone else.”
