No snow, but rain and a super high tide created a mess

There was a surprise waiting when we got to Waialae Beach Park this morning before dawn.

Waialae Stream overflowed sometime overnight, and flooded the entire Diamond Head side of the park. The benches seen in the photos are on a walkway that runs along the side of the stream. Well, not right along, maybe 15 feet back from edge of the stream. The primary cause seems to have been a sand bar that had built up at the mouth of the stream, which was not washed out by the rain.

And a very high tide carried debris up all along the beach, and across in front of the Kahala Beach Apartments and the Kahala Hotel.

Tide + rain = A mess

  1. Been there

Wow thank you Ian. That’s what happens at the Lanikai end of Kailua Beach. Then city has to come with bulldozers and move that sand out of the way fast or houses and streets upstream flood. Kailua Road where the new pricey townhouses were built used to flood in the winters.
