Back to school

We’re flying out soon for a trip to Walla Walla, Washington, to attend a Whitman College reunion. It’s not actually a reunion of our own class, but is for two classes that followed us. Several friends from those classes are part of a group of us who share a weekly Zoom call, so we decided to take the opportunity to meet up with them in WW.

The reunion officially starts on Thursday, and continues through Saturday. We’re staying on a couple of extra days. And while we’re gone, our cat sitter will be taking care of our extremely wary felines as well as the house.

Walla Walla isn’t the easiest place to get to. You can fly via Seattle on Alaska Airlines, but the schedule’s pretty bad for the connection to WW. We’re connecting via SFO to Pasco, Washington, about a 50-minute drive to Walla Walla.

We were there in 2011, when Meda was the commencement speaker, and again in 2015 for the last reunion that we attended of our own class.

The campus has changed a lot since we were in college, all new buildings, and the campus has extended over several adjacent blocks.

The area has changed, too. When we were in school there, the area was dominated by fields of wheat and peas, as I recall. After we graduated, a wine industry slowly developed, and now Walla Walla is defined by its many vineyards and production of fine wine.

But here are a couple of photos from our last two trips back to Whitman, just to give a bit of the flavor.

I’ll try to post while traveling, but may not be 100% reliable….

Enjoy your visit back to Whitman. I was last there some 5 plus years ago for a reunion. You are right about the sketchy transportation into Walla Walla. It is still a magical place for me in memory and the many friendships forged there that survived the decades that followed. Safe travels.

The little plane, sputters along for hours. Just to see what’s more Idaho than Washington. The School and the Farms. Don’t forget to drive to Oregon to buy supplies to avoid the sales tax.
The cats will be mad as heck and may not come out for hours!

Yes on the cats. That’s what they did to us after our last trip. We were punished.

And, yes, back when the dinosours roamed and we were in college, there were frequent “runs” to Oregon to avoid sales tax, often for alcoholic beverages.

At least now we can afford to pay the tax and buy the wine locally.
