What a fascinating image! I wonder what is burning to the far right ?
Cane fire. Likely Waipahu or Ewa Plantations.
Hard to imagine how dense Honolulu’s development was in a small area of lower rised structures.
Must say, Mayor Fasi clearing and converting vast tracks and parking lots to open space and lawns in the Capitol District are striking in history.
The sheer concentration and density in a square mile, comprised the entire town in 1957, that extended not far beyond the pictures, edges Diamond Head or Ewa.
Fabulous & sad at the same time!
Honolulu has changed so much over the years! Sadly it will continue to grow with all the high rises being built recently. I thought we had a water shortage DWS.
I thoroughly enjoy the Star-Advertiser’s “Back in the Day” photos. Now their showing more photos from the 80’s!
How about sharing a photo of the week Ian?
It looks like Aloha Tower was still the tallest buildiing in downtown.
I can smell that cane burning in my memories of 1950s Honolulu.
No sign of a major reef runway yet.
