Taking a couple of sick days

It finally happened. Two days after our flight back from California, it became obvious that both Meda and I brought a cold back with us. No covid, though, at least if those home tests are accurate. Runny nose, head full of cotton, brain functions slowed to a minimum. But no sore throat, minor fever (if any). Not covid. Whew.

But we’ve missed several days of our favorite dogs. And I’m going to claim a sick day or two, and won’t be posting anything substantial for at least another day.

Here’s an oldie for the day, which was buried in a digital pile of old photos that I scanned years ago.

This one dates from about 1975. I was working for the American Friends Service Committee, a Quaker-based service organization, which at that time had a tiny office in the garage of the Honolulu Friends Meeting actively involved in peace education. One part of my job was reaching out to churches, schools, civic clubs, and other audiences, to explain the Friends’ views of peace and nonviolence, and the increased relevance of such ideas to the national debate at that time.

I was making the rounds with a slide show that attempted to “localize” the debate over the nuclear arms race and arms control efforts by explaining the nuclearization of Oahu. A pair of news stories from the Sunday Star-Bulletin & Advertiser in 1975 highlighted our work at that time.

Yikes! That was almost 50 years ago!

In any case, it was a class at Castle High School. Social studies and history teachers were always eager to class time and generate discussions. I’m a little embarrassed now at the “look,” complete with long hair, untrimmed beard, and the classy slippahs, too. At the time, I don’t remember giving it a second thought.

Kyle Kajihiro, was the Friends spokesmen that educated me the most about military detriment in Hawaii. Many a bus trip and protest we did. I’ll always be grateful! Who’s the Friends action spokesman now? Healing thoughts to you and the nation.

It is extremely important we disarm these world ending weapons. Good work Ian. Also hope the bugs leave your body soon.

Some Hot & Sour Soup would make you feel better.

On another note How do you like your Nissan Leaf?

I was contemplating on buying one and seek your opinion on it.

I’m not fully sold on a full EV yet. The weight alone & range anxiety turns me off as it is.

I was contemplating a Honda Accord Hybrid so I would have something else to rely on not just battery alone.

    Thanks in advance!

    Hope you feel better soon!

Love that photo of you, Ian! You have led such an interesting life.

On the subject of covid and home tests… I got sick in May and I thought it was covid but home test was negative. I had read on Medscape that current strains can be better detected with a throat swab so I asked for one at urgent care. Positive. Then I ended up with long covid and I’m still suffering. I did have the sore throat so I’m not suggesting our situations are the same. Just trying to provide a little more info that people might not be aware of.

Half of the free home tests we received from the government were actually defective. I looked up that brand and I guess it was a known problem. The control line didn’t even light up, and I had to take several more home tests just to get the original negative. Sorry, I can’t remember the brand of the defective ones.

    Feel better soon!
