[Update: Questions answered! It’s a motion-activated sprinkler, likely used to chase off any ducks or other unwanted visitors to the pool area. See the comments below! Thanks to all who responded to the post.]
What is it??
When the tide is high in the morning, we sometimes walk past a large house along the 7th fairway at the Waialae Golf Course. We have never seen the house occupied, but it is well cared for, the yard well maintained, etc. It features a pool along the golf course side.
And that’s where this question comes from.
There are a couple of tripods set up along the pool in different areas. At first I thought maybe they would occasionally hold an iPhone and take time-lapse photos of the pool area for security purposes, perhaps.
But today I took a couple of pictures so I could examine the gizmo a bit better. In the photo below, you can see that a hose is attached to the central part of the tripod. And then there’s a little controller of some kind attached.
The second photo shows a closeup of the controller box. It has buttons to change the “Duration” and “Range,” and a knob that can be set for Day, Night, Always, or Off.
So the question is, simply, what is this gizmo and what is it controlling?

Mobile sprinkler system?
Google Image Search says it’s a motion activated sprinkler
https://www.orbitonline.com/products/yard-enforcer-motion-activated-sprinkler
It’s a sprinkler controller (fed by the garden hose), though who knows why they are deployed around the pool. If you could take another photo or two from a different angle or different lighting, might be able t o make out the writing on the part which is below the sprinkler head. Speculation: Our pool has attracted ducks wanting to reside and mate. Maybe they are intended to scare off ducks looking for a nesting site.
Amazing, but also HOW BIZARRE!
Motion-activated sprinkler system. Probably to keep pests/birds away from the swimming pool.
Ahhh, probably Blaine, as in techie teacher????????.
The mtnce crew is being afforded all the tools to keep place spiffy.
Would the house be affected if tax bill for uninhabited residences be enacted?
Animal deterrent – motion-activated sprinkler.

The gizmo is a deterrent, probably for birds. When something is detected it is sprayed with water. When we lived in Texas for a while we saw lots of these
used to chase deer from gardens.
Another question is whose house is this? It’s the former home of Akio Morita, the co-founder of electronics giant, Sony who passed away in 1999. I like to think of him as the creater of the Sony Wlakman which brought a lot of peace and quiet to the world. The house looks pretty neglected now.
Actually, it is the new house built next door to the Sony house. An older, quite beautiful home was demolished to build this new one.
The home with the sprinklers, shown while under construction in this photo, is marked.
The “Sony House” is below with the blue roof.
