Recovering from site problems

If you’ve been having problems connecting to this site today, you’re not alone.

I got an alert from a monitoring company that I use about noon, and I think the site was down for about two hours. It’s now about 2:15 p.m. Hawaiian time, and it appears to be back up and running.

It was a bad day to go down, since Civil Beat made a nice referral to today’s entry on the financial disclosures filed by Honolulu mayoral candidates.

But, as they say, it is what it is.

Thanks for stopping by.

A humbling lesson in blog economics.

As of 8:45 a.m. this morning, iLind.net has had over 550 page views and the Goodle Adsense ads arrayed around the fine editorial product have raked in a total of 26 cents.

On the other hand, the YouTube video featuring Mr. Romeo and I in a simulated “wake-up call” has already had 7,180 page views today and has earned $11.06 in Adsense revenue.

Yesterday the video had 11,480 views, while iLind.net had about 2,100.

Definitely humbling. I guess that I’m getting the same lesson that newspaper publishers are receiving every time they review circulation and revenues.

Please report problems displaying this page

After switching to a new WordPress theme in an attempt to solve the errors handling comments, one person has reported new problems displaying this page.

Yesterday, she reported:

The video concerning the Dalai Lama visit is covering your post.

Today, something similar:

The ads on the right hand side of the site partially cover up today’s posting and the pictures. Is this something having to do with my computer or is something happening on your site.

If you are having a similar problem, please email me or leave a comment below.

[Update] Comments may be fixed!

Update: I tried several solutions, then installed an updated WordPress theme. Something along the way may have fixed the problem, at least going forward. Fingers are crossed!

Further update: Yes, new comments are coming in. But I am still unable to go back to the recent reapportionment entry and add a comment there.

After my hosting service struck out in solving the comments “Forbidden” error, I turned to Google, only to discover this is a common WordPress problem.

Many solutions discussed online are beyond my familiarity with php coding, as I’m worried about further screwing up the WordPress installation. One “solution” I attempted made the whole site inaccessible, so I know that I need to be very careful.

Later today, I’ll try switching to a new theme, as one possible source of the error is use of an older theme that isn’t fully compatible with the latest version of WP.

If that doesn’t work, I’ll have to keep reading through suggested solutions until I find one that really works here.

In the meantime…I’m not really sure whether any comments at all are currently possible or not.

In the meantime, at least stop by and read….
