These Throwback Thursday photos, dating from the mid-1950s, were supposed to be posted yesterday, but somehow got lost in the shuffle.

Kahala Elementary School opened in the fall of 1954, a time when the surrounding neighborhood was filling with newly built housing, occupied by young families with children.

In the fall of 1955, a Cub Scout group based at the school was organized.

I was in Den 1 of the new Cub Scout Pack 116 when the first pack meeting was held. It was October 1, 1955, according to a note in a photo album where I found these pictures. I have a cub scout membership card dated a few weeks later.

When I checked online to see if Pack 116 still exists, it was a bit unsettling to see that the current packs are all numbered above 3,000. I guess 1955 was a long time ago.

Note how clean and fresh our new uniforms were.

The top photo shows the members of Den 1. Left to right: Douglas Fisher, Chad Dunstan, Tom Rycroft, Larry Olney, David Gregg, and Ian Lind.

Tommy Rycroft is the only one I’m not 100% certain of, but that’s the name that comes to mind.

The rest of the lineup looks the same as in the earlier photo, except for the shortest kid, in the middle. I don’t recognize him.

The only one I’ve kept in sporadic touch with over the years is Larry Olney. He’s been in or near Pasadena, California, since his family moved back there in about 1957. I visited him about the time I graduated from high school, and again in the mid-1970s. He has run his own tax service for years. Every once in a while I track down a phone number and give him a call.

I lost all contact with the rest of Den 1. But I still have these few pictures.
