Hannemann’s independent campaign appears to struggle with fundraising

Whew. Lots of nervous energy generated by today’s World Cup final. Even here in Kaaawa!

But now…

Here’s a look at the contributions reported by Independent Party candidate for governor, Mufi Hannemann from the beginning of 2014 through the end of June. The campaign reported 73 contributors who gave more than $100 during the period. Their contributions totaled $139,650, while small contributions of $100 or less came to an additional $5,950, according to the campaign’s report filed with the Campaign Spending Commission. Hannemann family members added $13,200.

That’s a substantial amount, but it’s not enough to fuel a contested general election campaign. That could simply be a matter of Hannemann’s late entry into the race, as well as the competition for funds. Perhaps the next scheduled report will give a better indication of the campaign’s prospects.

Hannemann’s contributions can be compared to the $227,848.98 collected by Democrat David Ige during the same period, including $47,656.25 in amounts of $100 or less. Ige had 475 contributors who gave over $100.

In any case, here are the 73 contributors reported by Mufi Hannemann’s campaign, sorted from largest to smallest reported amount.

What is the citizenship of Sir Deryck C. Maughan and Lady Va Maughan? Section 11-356, Hawaii Revised Statutes entitled “Contributions by foreign national or foreign corporation prohibited” may be relevant here.

Searching the web quickly reveals that Sir Maughan is definitely British, but he has been in the US a long time so he is probably a dual citizen. I doubt that he or the MH campaign would make such a basic mistake.
