Saturday…Honolulu in 1913, post-Thanksgiving diversions

Honolulu 1913

I’ve been wasting time browsing the Library of Congress online digital collections which, despite some rather odd indexing, contain lots of great old photos and documents, including many from Hawaii.

This happens to be a panoramic photo of Honolulu taken in 1913, looking across the harbor and city towards Diamond Head. Click on this small photo and you’ll see a much larger version that will probably require scrolling to see the full width. Testing it out, it seems that if you click on the small photo above, you can then make the version you get larger by expanding the “window” in your browser. Try it, as much more detail is visible in the picture viewed at maximum size.

My brain is on “slow” because it feels like it should be Sunday morning following the Thanksgiving stuffing and yesterday’s football game. Yes, I somehow ended up watching the whole thing via ESPN’s HD broadcast. Better than being there and we didn’t have to fight the traffic.

It may have been just after the end of the game that the ESPN commentators started on a riff about the embarrassingly poor physical condition of facilities at the UH athletic department. Meda looked up from her Sudoku puzzle and said simply, “oh, just like the rest of the campus.” Will a national airing of the problem help? It might get better football facilities, but probably won’t speed up the rehab of the rest of the Manoa campus.

Aha.

Here’s another time waster–an “unofficial” Google Maps blog, featuring all sort of imaginative things you can try.

Foodsters among you might want to try out Sonia Tastes Hawaii, a blog about a blog about Hawaii food and food products.

That should keep you busy on a post-Thanksgiving Saturday.

Neat photo. I love archival imagery. I love the expired copyrights almost as much. Where was that shot taken? Looks like it’s from the bottom of Punchbowl (if that’s Iolani Palace and Kawaihao Church toward the left).

The commentators said that (about shoddy facilities) during the game, as well. Good PR by June Jones. Too bad he won’t speak up for the rest of us at UH.

I went to UH in the middle ’70s and thought the campus needed alot of help then. At the time the new parking structure (in the quarry) was the best building on campus.
