Some island residents are among those receiving written notices from Countrywide Mortgage that their personal information, including social security number and loan information, was stolen and sold by a former company employee.
A friend of mine called last night to describe the letter he received and to “vent” about the lack of state support for people in his situation.
My friend said he looked in the phone book and saw “consumer protection” in the listings of the Department of Commerce and Consumer affairs, and called the number. He said he thought they might have a advice for actions to take in event of such a loss of personal data, perhaps a check list of things to do. Nope. He also wondered whether others had called about it, but was told they don’t track such information.
Gov. Linda Lingle last month directed all state agencies to list their public meeting notices on the state calendar.
Lingle’s August 18 Executive Memorandum says the legal requirement to file meeting notices with the Lt. Governor’s office isn’t sufficient.
ALthough many state boards and commissions also post these notices on their websites or on the State Calendar, not all do, and as a result, the public cannot easily obtain information on all board and commission meetings and misses opportunities to participate in them.
As far as I know, this is the first time all meeting notices have been required to go on the central calendar, which can be viewed at www.hawaii.gov (it’s displayed in the middle column).
Love that statement by former HP CEO and McCain campaign advisor Carly Fiorina, who said the presidential candidates aren’t qualified to run a major corporation.
I think I detect some of the hubris apparently epidemic among the corporate elite who think they are somehow the chosen ones. Fiorina’s comments clarify that they see themselves as more skilled than the world’s political leaders. Along with that, I’m sure, goes “more deserving” as well. Wow. Did she watch any of yesterday’s financial news and have any self doubts at all?
Oh, from the ongoing Palin watch, check this report from the Wall Street Journal.
In response to a question yesterday–I voted for Jessica Wooley for the House seat in District 47 over primary opponent Maria Pacheco. Wooley is an attorney, environmentalist, with a background in volunteer service as well. I think she’s going to be a great addition to the House if she has the opportunity.

You forgot the most important point, Wooley knows how to run a campaign. That is the biggest strike against Maria Pacheco. I wasn’t even aware she was in the race until very recently. It does not speak well of our democracy that there are no public forums to introduce candidates to the voters. I had to go looking for both candidates. Which is sad.
Thanks for the link to the Palin article, Ian.
The scariest thing I can think of is Sarah Palin in office, so I’m in the process of assembling that costume for the two parties I will be attending.
The last time I expressed political sentiment as a Halloween costume was a number of years ago. I was Oregon’s Measure 9 — designed to take away essential civil rights of gay people.
Ian, I am sure that Jessica Wooley is glad to have your vote. As for me, I am a lifetime resident of O’ahu and I cast my vote for Maria Pacheco for House District 47. I took one look at her website on her endosement page and I see she will owe a lot of favors.
Jessica that is.
