We got home about 6:30 yesterday evening.
I listened to a couple of telephone messages, took off my shoes, started feeding the cats.
Then I heard Meda calling from down the hall.
“We’ve been robbed.”
Again.
Not a robbery, of course. We weren’t here. It would be classified a burglary. Burglary 1st, according to the receipt for the police report.
In our bedroom, evidence of a search. Also in our two extra bedrooms, used as offices.
The list of stolen items is long and will undoubtedly grow longer. A 37″ wide screen television. My Canon XTi digital slr camera, my main camera, although a couple of years old. My smaller Canon G9. Meda’s 15″ Powerbook G4 laptop. Jewelry.
But also lots of things not taken. I won’t recite those here.
I had my laptop with me at the Capitol, so it’s safe. So there are a few bits of good news among the rest.
We didn’t see how they got into the house. It wasn’t until the police came that we discovered that the thieves climbed up into a high window using a small ladder found under the house. The screen was cut out, giving away their entry point.
Cats didn’t do anything to stop them.
A worker across the street saw two young males come out of our end of the street mid-morning. The suspects. Neither one was seen carrying off the television.
My little camera set up to check in on the cats when we’re traveling caught a photo of one of the burglars before it was knocked off its perch behind the television. I didn’t locate the file while the police were here–the sequence of images had gotten jumbled, so I thought nothing had been captured beyond a blur. But this morning, when I check through the images, at least one shows a young man, dressed in nondescript old clothing, shorts, gray t-shirt, wearing a jacket with hood up, and with what look like white plastic bags on his hands, worn like gloves. That’s why the police couldn’t get any fingerprints even on good surfaces. He’s also got a high black stocking on his right leg, as if the leg is injured, or perhaps for circulation, etc. He’s covering the lower part of his face with a hand, but might be recognizable. I’ll get this file to the police later this morning.
If this person looks familiar, please let us know.
So today we’re in recovery mode. Contacting our insurance agent, belatedly looking for a security system, trying to get over the jitters of having people invading your space.
Cops said, “Maybe you should get a dog.” Our dog would probably beg for a biscuit and roll over.

Three cheers for the cat cam! The one-sock bandit has got to be distinct. Interesting use of plastic bags on hands. I hope you can bring these punks to justice.
Ian-Check your voicemail this morning.
This story gave me chills as I was reading it. Especially when it got down to the bottom and you saw the photo. It’s scary how it’s almost as if that kid is looking right at you…
Being violated is one of the worst feelings in the world! I’m so sorry this had to happen to you. I hope everything gets resolved…and look at the bright side, all of the cats are okay!
Oddly, I was just talking to some homeowners last night who were planning extra security. They were convinced the downturn in the economy would result in an increase in home invasions.
This totally sucks. Hope the captured image is high enough resolution.
The key word in your post this morning is “Again.” Clearly your home is under observation.
Dayum, dass a beyotch, Ian. Sorry!
But typical cops: I love the implication; yer fault cuz you don’t have a dog!
Sorry to hear about your break-in. Also, I’m curious as to what you may be feeling about your blogging (twittering, etc.) and if it has perhaps contributed to the casing of your home. Good luck in your efforts at resolving things.
Ian, I’m so sorry to hear about the burglary. That’s terrifying. Does your insurance cover for theft?
That really sucks! I hope they catch the “troubled youth”. If anything, It will motivate me to get a new web/security cam for my house.
Take Care,

Sorry to hear this. I was thinking he has the sock covering his leg because he might have ID-able tattoos. You would be wise to take the photo in to some local businesses, starting with Waikane Store and up to the Hauula area. Have the 7-11 employees and owners take a look. Also check with the mom and pop places like Ching’s and Kaya’s in Punalu`u and the post offices and with mail delivery people. They see a lot.
