I would urge anyone who is considering adopting one of those puppies to do some research on the internet first. Rottweilers were bred to be working dogs–herding livestock, pulling carts, etc. Consequently, they need lots of exercise, attention, and training. Quoting from one website:

“The Rottweiler needs plenty of exercise. You can’t give these robust dogs too much work or exercise; they thrive on it. They need to be taken on a daily walk or jog. Running in the woods and in open country makes them very happy and they have no desire to wander from you. Swimming or running beside a bicycle are perfect activities for this dog and it also loves retrieving a ball.”

(A couple of years ago, we took over the care of an Australian Shepherd, another breed of working dog. Our Aussie is eleven years old now and still has amazing energy and intensity. We take her on walks twice a day to channel some of that energy.)

The animal behaviorist Temple Grandin states that dogs should not be left cooped up alone all day. If your Rottie would be left alone for long periods of time, it would be better to have two dogs, according to her, or to leave your dog with a neighbor who is at home during the day.
