Friday…Media tidbits–Family conflict, finding real news, more on Black, and a great series of surrealistic commercials

Several media items to start the day.

A reader called my attention to this first case.

According to a “reader submitted” item in the Honolulu Advertiser last month from Su Shin, Sandwich Isles Communications held a “virtual field trip” to showcase its newly completed fiber optic cable linking five islands. The Advertiser item doesn’t tell us that Su Shin is vice-president of strategic alliances for Waimana Enterprises, parent company of Sandwich Isles.

And when KITV had Dan Meisenzahl report live on the virtual field trip, including a long-distance interview with Sandwich Isles’ CEO Robert Kihune, viewers didn’t have any way of knowing that Meisenzahl and Su Shin are married.

Meisenzahl asked Kihune about the Sandwich Isle bid to buy Hawaiian Telcom out of bankruptcy: “”What makes you folks think you can succeed where Hawaiian Tel has failed recently?”

The softball question gave Kihune a platform to provide a glowing account of his company’s performance and structure. But knowing Meisenzahl’s wife is an officer of Kihune’s company makes it difficult to know whether the question was intended for the benefit of the viewer or the company.

I suppose you could say that it’s certainly a pretty strategic alliance, but extremely awkward in journalism terms.

And from retired Star-Bulletin editor Chuck Frankel:

Wednesday’s Honolulu Weekly carried an excellent story on the Morman Church’s plan to develop Malaekahana near Laie with 1,200 homes, a shopping center and a light industrial park. Thursday’s Advertiser and Star-Bulletin followed with shorter, shallower articles. If you wanted to know what is planned near Laie, you really needed to read Honolulu Weekly.

–Chuck Frankel

Yes, indeed, it’s low tide in the news pool.

The Globe and Mail just published a long and largely positive profile of Star-Bulletin owner David Black. No mention of the S-B, but it mentions that Black’s company expects to turn a profit this year.

My old friend, Mr. Mike, now in Hilo sent this tidbit.

Yesterday, the NYT reviewed a film by the Swedish film director Roy Andersson, who is noted for the surrealism of his work. He has had to support himself by making commercials. I found a YouTube video that compiles several of those commercials. Several of them speak to the times! Here’s the link. Highly recommended!!

He’s right. Take a look.

I agree that the Honolulu Weekly’s article on Laie had depth. But I find the writing style in the Weekly is sometimes sluggish and boring. I know it’s not a daily, but Carlson didn’t get to the point until 5 paragraphs in. And there isn’t a quote from an actual person until 10 paragraphs in. It’s a great quote, but I doubt too many people made it that far before flipping to the entertainment section instead. It’s a good story–just needed an edit.
