If you were wandering in the basement of the State Capitol over the holidays, you might have run into the Christmas tree tucked into a corner just outside the House Chief Clerk’s office.

A quick glance, and it appears to be a nicely decorated tree.

A closer look, though, and you realize it’s got a message.

First thing you notice is that the top of the tree has been cut off, leaving it with kind of a stubby look. Where the top of the tree used to be is a sign: “20% Budget Cut”.

Then you notice the little tags mixed in with the decorations.

“Budget Cuts”. “Pay Cut”. “Laid Off”.

Although there’s tinsel and ornaments, the bulbs are missing from the strings of lights. “De-Lamping”, one tag reads.

Then there was this one, with a commentary on the ripple effect of layoffs.

“Aw, Man,” says one reindeer. “I had to bump Prancer.”

All in all, an interesting commentary. Interesting that it was obviously put together quite thoughtfully, and was allowed to remain in place in one of the key centers of the House leadership.
