Advice to bloggers: Don’t upgrade software on a deadline

Here’s some sage advice: Don’t get up early to blog for the day and get sidetracked into installing an update of your blogging software.

That’s what I did this morning when I got a notice about a new 3.0 version of MarsEdit, my blogging software of choice since August 2008.

It seemed to go smoothly until the new version was loaded and running.

Then I quickly started stumbling over little changes in the interface.

That hurt.

It had all been humming along so smoothly before the “upgrade”. Now, not so much.

I’m sure that the upgrade will eventually be well worth it, once the shock has worn off.

And obviously the early a.m. time pressure hadn’t made things any easier.

I still think MarsEdit is a good, solid choice for offline editing if you’re a Mac blogger.

It will just take a day or two to get everything tweaked to my satisfaction.

For people who are veterans in the field of video production, the hard and fast rule is never upgrade software in the middle of a project.

Systems that are nice and stable can become impossibly unstable or even non-functional when you need them most.

What I do is have a second, independent hard drive with a complete, functioning backup on which I will do any upgrades or changes. If something doesn’t work, I can quickly jump back to the previous configuration.
