Growing pain at Civil Beat

I don’t know what it means or what the circumstances were, but it’s been less than a full month since Honolulu Civil Beat’s official launch, and two “reporter-hosts”–Katherine Nichols and Treena Shapiro–have reportedly already left the staff.

Both came to Civil Beat with substantial experience.

That’s one-third of their six reporters already gone.

The company’s blog has told readers all about various site improvements, easier navigation, and referral credits. Nothing about the sudden departures. I would have expected at least a respectful “aloha” as they went out the door.

And, over at the Honolulu Advertiser, staff hoping to land jobs at the new “Star-Advertiser”, should be learning whether or not they will be employed after next week.

I believe it will be sooner than that. “After next week” is when the Advertiser will be no more.

I would hope they know “after next week” … the paper is shutting down on the 6th or 7th. The question is, why don’t they know now? Kinda disrespectful to string people along.

Goes to show you how much “merging” is going on. Practically none. The Advertiser is being killed and the bones of its staff picked over.

      I’m sorry for the ambiguity.
In my post, I intended “after this week” to refer to the time period of the jobs that might or might not be offered, not to the notification, which I expected to arrive immediately.

I obviously could have been clearer:

“And, over at the Honolulu Advertiser, staff hoping to land jobs at the new “Star-Advertiser”, should be learning momentarily whether or not they will still be employed after next week.”

Ouch. Katharine and Treena are both excellent, talented folks. Maybe they got better offers elsewhere? Or it’s a growing pains shakeout from an organization trying desperately to reinvent the wheel.

Rumor has it that any former SB employee that left and went over to HA when Black took over a few years ago will not be considered at all for a job. Also from what I am seeing on the sales side is SB employees are taking over and they are letting go of some very talented HA sales people. Sad day.
