Hawaii’s “Best Journalist”, according to the Star-Advertiser’s Hawaii’s Best poll…blogger Catherine Toth.
Second Place: KHON weather guy Justin Cruz.
Oh, my.
Then there are the changes being announced by the Star-Advertiser.
We’ve already heard that the comics have been expanded. Today its the bridge column, even more comics, “a new comics lineup, printed larger.”
Changes in fonts and color.
Not a moment too soon.
A note from editor Frank Bridgewater on today’s front page promises expanded coverage of “new areas”. I will not hold my breath, but would welcome being surprised.
On a positive front, Gordon Pang will start work tomorrow as the new police beat reporter. Congratulations to Gordon.

As for “Hawaii’s Best” sadly it’s the “Star-Advertiser’s Worst” advertising ploy.
(No offense to Justin or Catherine, for those who take offense to everything. Justin and Catherine probably are more than a bit bewildered by this too.)
How much credibility should anyone put into these “best of” popularity contests? I suspect the main reason the paper does it is to sell advertising.
For example, take the food category. It obviously favors the “big boys” and not the lesser known places.
Best bento is Zippy’s? Puhlease.
If there was a category for Best Mexican, Taco Bell would probably win.
As far as the best journalists, all due respect to the winners, but . . .
More changes: Assistant city editor Dan Woods, rehired two weeks ago (he used to work at the Star-Bulletin in the olden days), quit two days ago.
Will the positions be filled or will existing staff be expected, as usual, to fill the gaps?
What would compel someone to leave a paying job when similar work is seldom available elsewhere?
Catherine Toth WAS a journalist, not anymore. Wonder why she won the poll.
I just LOVE the TRAVEL SECTION of the SA, because of the stupendous number of ads!!! Something that the SB, which we subscribed to, lacked.
Wish I’d seen these ads when I was planning my trip to Hong Kong in March. What bargains to be had now.
The SA web site hasn’t improved, though. The editors there are kissing it off, leaving it in the hands of non-journalists.
For example, the SA’s current webbies today referred to Republicans as “the Gop.”
Talk about editorializing in a headline! π
And that is what happens when you copy/paste headlines from other sources . The current Web staffers are not even bothering to rewrite the suggested wire story headlines. That’s not to blame them β they don’t know any better.
And the second New York Times headline includes the byline as part of the headline, which completely changed the meaning of the headline: “In border violence, perception greater than crime statistics by Randal C. Archibold”
Randal C. Archibold is a NYT writer, not a crime statistician.
Wait a minute … Leila Fujimori is the cops reporter, or at least she was. So another Advertiser employee is pushing another SB employee out of her/his beat. That’s at least the sixth one. And what becomes of Leila?
People just don’t get it. It’s the Star-Bulletin that closed, not the Advertiser. Congrats, Tizer staffers β you won! Enjoy the growing resentment from your new coworkers.
Over at the Tiser, beat reporters were periodically reassigned. Many of them would, in a heartbeat, prefer that to their current state: unemployment. Not sure how anyone can say Tiser staffers “won.”
Oh, Charles, I just adore you!
My other half and I were laughing at exactly the Zippy’s mention too. What a load of BS.
As for SA, I am most displeased with their blog area, specifically Derrick’s lack of a home. I want a single blog roll, that stays put, that is only Derrick’s. If that means pushing out BJ, so be it. Sorry, Derrick’s my peeps. And what is with the blog STILL popping up on the SB website?
Wow…one would think that the two canned on line staffers had worked at the NYT or something the way they fill up this site with their sour grapes posts. And the shots just keep flying in….isn’t there a fridge somewhere that needs cleaning out?? As for the SA poll Ian….that poll was completed way back in January and February with the former Advertiser staff. It was just published now. It’s a shame though that you only see the paper for whatever news content it provides and not the information and entertainment value that it and every paper in the country holds with readers. oh and psst….the new SA on liners all came from THA on line.
SA getting lickings for printing ‘click here’ in the print edition…

ouch!
I’ve noticed more typos than usual and less news, which is really an accomplishment if you think about it. Hoping they will settle in and find their way to serving the community more than just ads. I have to trust that they will, because if they don’t, nobody will read the paper.
You got to take a closer look, the newspaper is the Honolulu Advertiser.
More typos??? I think I found a mistake made by you, looks like you don’t read the paper.
Oh Phooey…glass houses and all that. My mistake, it was the Advertiser.
oops.
@hipoli, your other half?! Okay, I was never good at math but I thought I was at least a fraction, no?
π
You caught that, did you, Sir Charles?
Alas, I fear that I might be a bit of a two-timing hussey.
But knowing you, thats just how you like your women.
π
Geez Ian….just how out of touch are you with 2010?? These “best of” are fun “reader polls” and they are done all ove the country. Big deal. most people figure out that it’s simply a reflection of the readership and community at large. Yes, my dear friend, not every one is interested in a sod farm on Kauai or another rail story missed blog….SOME people just don’t give a darn and want something entertaining to read. Your post makes it appear you believe that these “best” winners were picked by SA editors or something….
The Huffington Post snigger is about something the Advertiser did last month, not the current Star-Advertiser. It was either a thoughtless cut-and-paste or an excessively clever irony by the writer.
The “Hawaii’s Best” poll was conducted by advertising departments before the merger was announced, and always came out in June. The new SA inherited it already packaged.
If it’s not a product of the Star-Advertiser, then why run it? With the new re-branded publication, why not stick to material the new venture produces instead of using dated material from a company that no longer exists?
