In 1940, Gene “Tarzan” Smith paddled a surfboard from Oahu to the island of Kauai. The event was sponsored by the Hawaii Surfing Association which had been formed just a year earlier.
When the Waikiki Surf Club was formed in 1947, Smith became its first beach attendant.
My father, John Lind, president of the HSA, was in charge of preparations for Smith’s Kauai paddle. These photographs and undated newspapers clippings were found among his papers. Use the link at the top of this entry to view this small collection.

My great grandma (Phyllis Smith) tells me stories of the different things her brother (Gene Smith) did throughout his life. I love reading more about his life though since my great grandma turns 100 this year who knows how much longer her stories will be able to last.
My mother, Virginia Billhardt, was married to Gene in the 1940’s. Would love to hear more about Gene and his life.
