A Waikiki funeral circa 1948

It’s a funeral. That’s obvious.

Beyond that, I don’t know anything about this occasion. The photos were among my dad’s pictures and papers from the period around 1948.

The top photo shows a group gathered around what appears to be a funeral wreath, all wearing Waikiki Surf Club and swim trunks.

The middle photo is a gem. In the lead, a group of legends in surfing, paddling, and ocean sports. Second from the left looks like it could be “Toots” Minvielle, founder of the Molokai-Oahu canoe race in 1952, or perhaps Hui Nalu’s John D. Kaupiko. I’m just comparing to available old photos and trying to make a “match”.

Then there’s an unidentified man carrying a folded American flag. In the background, 4th from left, legendary swimming and canoe coach George “Dad” Center. Then, of course, there’s Duke Kahanamoku. All barefooted, bare chested, and ready to go into the water, followed by women in long dresses and several other men, at least on in a suit and tie.

The bottom photo shows canoes lined up on the beach in front of the old Outrigger Canoe Club, a scene played out again on a grander scale for Kahanamoku’s 1968 funeral procession.

Hopefully someone may be able to identify some of the other people and add some background to these photos.

I wish that I had a better recollection of what Zulu looked like during his days with the Waikiki Surf Club.

If you come by any pictures that have Zulu or Gilbert Kauhi on them… can you please “flag” me on them.

to Ian Lind, the middle picture is a picture of my dad Hiram Anahu’s funeral procession through the Outrigger Canoe Club’s parking lot, Feb, 1949, led by Akong Pang, “Old Man” John D. Kaupiko, Joe Akana (holding the urn), Harold (unknown last name), Dad Center, Duke Kahanamoku, Earl and Dawn Anahu Fernandez (Hiram’s only child), his brother and sister, Ben Anahu and Edith Anahu Olsen and their families. He had a military service held on the beach, among the Hau trees, between the Moana Hotel and the Outrigger Canoe Club. Splash Lyons played their Hui Nalu Club song and the beach boys stopped singing at a point where my dad’s bass voice sang solo, then they continued the song. He was one the original members of Hui Nalu as their Secretary. This picture was one of eleven pictures in the April 1949 issue of the Paradise of the Pacific with an article “Aloha At Waikiki” on pages 28, 29, and 30.

      Hi William,

You are correct that William Machado Anahu had two sisters, Milla Kini Machado Anahu and Annabell Kaumelani Machado Anahu.

Milla married Frederick Olaf Tollefsen. Annabell married Richard Allen.
William, the youngest, married Beatrice Rose Martha Theresa Wahl (Anahu, Krabacher). They had a son, David Anahu (adopted by Krabacher) and became known as David Krabacher. David married Mary Lynn. Their two children are Tiahna Linn Krabacher and David Ian Krabacher. Tiahna married Willard Boyd McDowell.

Tiahna’s phone number is (919) 210-3853 if you’d like to contact her. I think she would like to hear from you.

I would like to add you to my Anahu Family Tree, if you would give me info on you and your parents, names, dates of birth, where born, etc

      Aloha William & Dawn
I read your posts with great interest! Annabelle was my great aunt and her sister, Milla, was my maternal grandmother. I never met William or my grandmother as they both passed before I was born but I did get to spend a lot of time with “Aunty Anna” before she passed and I am in contact with my cousin, Tiahna. Glad I saw this post ?

    Dear Dawn,
I may just now be seeing your response.
Which Anahu adopted the Machado kids (William, Milla and Annabel)?
I have pictures of myself as a child with Milla and/or Annabelle.
My grandmother (married to Albert Leal Machado) was Inez Goode (Machado). She was born in Tennessee in 1901. They had a son (my father) Albert Goode Machado, he was born Feb 27th 1931 in San Francisco? he married my mom Carmelita Theresa Raney (Machado) she was born July 19th 1933 in Stockton CA. I was born Nov 22, 1955, my brother David Jan 17th, 1958, both of us were born in San Jose, CA. Our parents divorced in 1969…they both remarried but remained connected. They both passed in Sept 2019 (6 days apart). I have actually been in email contact with David Krabacher ( I know he lives in North Carolina). How are we related (albeit through the adoption of the Machado children)? I have always felt connected to William M Anahu and have several photos of him in my house.
