Abercrombie addresses faith, spirituality and religion

Recommended: Video of Neil Abercrombie speaking last week with FACE (Faith Action for Community Equity) “to discuss the issue of faith in public life with an audience of clergy.”

Photographer Dwight Morita was there with camera and captured a 33 minute video. He comments:

Mr. Abercrombie addresses certain criticisms that have been leveled at him and other candidates for office, critiquing whether they have the right credentials of faith and religion to be in a leadership position in government.

In Neil Abercrombie’s response, you will find a depth of thinking and reflection that I find rare in a public official. After all, how many politicians do you know who study and quote such lights as Thomas Merton, the Dalai Lama, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Mahatma Gandhi, Paul Tillich, or Rheinhold Neibhur?

Good question. Most politicians probably couldn’t even identify most of those.

Drew Astolfi, FACE executive director, while sidestepping a direct endorsement, added his own comment:

…the man we met with bore no resemblance to the caricature that has been circulating on emails and in video and internet adds. The man in this video is deeply spiritual and fully engaged with the moral dilemma of trying to be a good man in the world. Please forward this to friends and family who may have been unfairly influenced by smears from people who are trying to (sinfully) use religion to win an election.

Anyway, do check it out.

Chad Blair offers excellent insight on Civil Beat about FACE & Abercrombie. This is, of course, a very important issue the attempt to bring religion into overturning the rights garanteed by the Constitution to all Americans, and the absolute importance of the separation of church and state.
