I saw the obituary and I am saddened to hear about the death of your father. Our thoughts are with you and your family.
Hi Ian.
I just read about your father. I’ve been reading your posts about your father and your visits. My thoughts and prayers to you and your family.
There’s something very validating about hearing someone else say the things about your family member that you already know. It gives an emotional fullness to all the neatly, rationally organized memories we have about our departed family members.
It wasn’t until after my mother’s death that I met many of the friends she made in the years following my departure from the nest and it was most gratifying to hear other people speak of her in ways I had not experienced, or had experienced in a different context. Until death comes, we are always in the process of becoming, and once death comes we have a chance to do the calculations — on many levels — that tell us what someone became.
It’s an extraordinary time in one’s life when a parent passes and you have handled it with grace, humility, and humor. Thank you for sharing all of that with us.

My sympathies on the loss of your father. It’s never easy to watch a loved one slip away, while you’re doing the best you can to keep them with you. A well-lived life. May he rest in eternal peace and comfort.
Condolences on your father’s passing, Ian. We may not have met, but I’m Mindy Pennybacker’s husband, who has sent me to your blog frequently. Just wanted to say that I’m also a Long Beach native and my father and yours no doubt surfed and lifeguarded together. Sounds like a great man. Take care.

Sorry to hear of your loss. The article did a good job of giving a rough feeling for your father. Sounds like he was a very good man and that the apple did not fall far from the tree.
