A Kaaawa wedding

[text]In the midst of final planning for the scattering of my dad’s ashes in the ocean off Waikiki later this week, I was asked if I would take photographs at a wedding for a family just around the corner and down Hiwahiwa Street.

This is a story that reflects Kaaawa. I’ve taken photos for the family on several previous occasions–for a 60th birthday party, for a 1st baby luau, and one set of high school graduation photos.

A couple of years ago, one of the young men in the family was caught on camera burglarizing our house. His mother assisted in getting a few of the stolen items back, and the family reached out for our forgiveness. We gladly embraced them, although we pursued criminal charges in the case. They understood.

Being asked to help out with photographs for this big occasion added to the neighborhood healing process. At least that’s how it felt to me.

The wedding was delayed because the bride was an hour and a half late. But after that, it went smoothly. The rain held off, thankfully. And the party that followed was outstanding.

Congratulations to Scott and Jade.

The family knows talent when they see it. You are a talented photographer, Ian. Possible side business which could become profitable?

My daughter paid $2,000 for her wedding photos, which were well done.

I’ve thought about trying to do this for money, but…right now, it’s a gift that I’m in a position to make. It builds relationships and friendships. That’s worth a lot. Under the circumstances, I don’t really want to transform these subtle relationships into a provider-client relationship. Work and trying to make a little money is one thing. Giving people we know this gift of images is a qualitatively different thing. It feels right.

    Marvelous photographs of beautiful people.

Best wishes for Scott and Jade:

May you be poor in misfortune, rich in blessings, slow to make enemies and quick to make friends. And may you know nothing but happiness from this day forward.

    ian,

if only the world breathed the same air and drank the same water you do, then, perhaps their hearts and minds would be as big as yours…good karma.
