Top campaign contributors to Mayor Peter Carlisle’s campaign

With all attention on the politics of the House yesterday, I ended up spending some time browsing around the city.

First stop: Mayor Peter Carlisle’s campaign backers.

Here’s a list of top donors to his campaign who gave $4,000 each, the most allowed by state law. Click on this list and you’ll be treated by a list of all those giving $2,000 or more. It wasn’t quite what I had expected to see for the former prosecutor.

A quick scan, and you’ll see a donor base heavy with development and visitor industry sources. Draw your own conclusions.

One contribution caught my eye: $2,500 from Mary Jean Castillo-Barkley, CEO of something called MJ888M Productions. I was curious about the company. Google turned up a May 20, 2009 press release by Attorney General Mark Bennett about Hawaii’s participation in a nationwide crackdown on fraudulent charitable solicitors and those claiming to support police, firefighters, and veterans. MJ888M Productions was listed as one of two solicitors found to have violated state law.

In any case, here’s the list.

No surprises here. Carlisle is not breaking the mold of Mayors indebted to developers and the tourist industry. I had hoped that because he wasn’t a normal politician he might different. But when he reappointed Tanoue he basically told everyone that he was as bad as Mufi.

I love it when these big wigs list their “occupation” as
“retired” and “homemaker”……hahaha….Ian, on this short list
alone the group with those “occupations” are easily worth over ONE
    BILLION DOLLARS…..

Another interesting donation for the glib ex-prosecutor, now mayor to accept is the one from Mike and Sandy Hartley. Most will remember Mike Hartley from airline/travel endeavours The Hawaii Express, Air Hawaii, and Cheap Tickets, the first two of which failed in short order. One of the reasons he struggled with the airline operations was regulator disapproval of his prior federal conviction for running a huge pot smuggling operation that some say provided the capital for his business ventures.

“Prosecutor accepts max $ from dope dealer to get elected mayor.” Only in Hawaii?

Carlisle is a chameleon. Carlisle is the torch carrier of
status quo when he became elected. Pre-election Carlisle was all
about change. Mufi Hannemann’s footprints are is all over Carlisle
‘change agent” administration. I will not vote for him
    again.

I guess I could do the research, but I would prefer to pick the brains of those of you who have specialized in this field. During the election, I got the feeling some of the big players who were supporting Mufi’s campaign were not, contrary to public assumptions, supporting Caldwell, but were supporting the “newcomer” Carlisle. I think Caldwell lost because it was assumed he was “Mufi’s boy” and would continue his policies, whereas Carlisle was a “clean,” independent former Republican, unsullied by years of politicking.

To what extent is there support in this data for my gut feeling during the election?

    Thanks
