Annelle Amaral calls for overcoming the “take it from them” impulse

Former state representative, longtime women’s advocate and Hawaiian activist, Annelle Amaral, was honored last night at a reception sponsored by the State Commission on the Status of Women. The event at Washington Place was part of the commission’s celebration of Women’s History Month.

Amaral addressed the current fiscal crisis in her brief remarks, calling for actions informed by Hawaiian traditions of generosity and giving. She urged the public and legislators to transcend the “take it from them” impulse in order to protect those who are most vulnerable.

She called on people to look at themselves in a different spirit.

“I have enough. For the good of others, take it from me.”

Annelle said it eloquently, and I caught her conclusion on video.

Thank you, Annelle, for leading the way. Again.

Amaral and other lefties say “I have enough. For the good of others, take it from me.”

But there’s nothing stopping them from giving it of their own accord. They don’t need to wait for the government to take it from them. They can simply give it if they wish.

What these lefties are really saying is: “You have more than you need, and we’re going to take it from you whether or not you want to give it.” Or another way of putting it: “We think those guys don’t have enough, and we think you have more than you need, so we’re gonna hold a gun to your head (threat of arrest) and take it from you and give it to them.” That’s not any “Hawaiian value” I ever heard of. Did I miss something in George Kanahele’s book?

Ken Conklin read George Kanahele’s book? Could have fooled me.

Like Jim Loomis, I am reaffirmed in my “lefty” views and the apparently threatening (to KC)radical notion that those who have more should give more. Instead of holding the govt to ransom unless their Bush-era tax cuts are preserved for example, the wealthy and super wealthy could agree to pay their fair share of taxes. There is nothing fair about the vast gulf in this rich country between those who have more homes than they can occupy and those who go hungry and are homeless. Annelle’s message was crystal clear.
