Congratulations to Daryl Huff, who walked away from one side of the news biz on Friday with two awards in the Hawaii SPJ’s annual journalism competition, as well as a good final story on the air.
Daryl, we’re really going to miss your reporting. There aren’t many left with a real nose for the stories and the skill to dig into them.
In any case, the SPJ Hawaii web site has a nice photo and, perhaps more important, the list of winners in this year’s contest.
Daryl’s last story was a follow-up on the feud between campaign consultant Keith Rollman and conservative GOP activist Eric Ryan.

Huff’s story, based on a letter from the city prosecutor’s office to HPD concerning their investigation of Rollman’s complaint about internet harassment, included an exclusive interview with Rollman. The story was co-reported by Civil Beat, which included a copy of the letter and additional details.
Rollman has been responding from his own perspective on his Atomic Monkey Blog which, by the way, provides high-quality satire with a biting edge. Definitely worth checking from time to time, even if you don’t agree with him.
A check of comments left on this blog found a half-dozen using Rollman’s fictitious alter ego, two early last year from a city computer.

I see the Bulletin was true to it’s word and didn’t enter SPJ. I wonder if they were afraid of the neighbor island competition or just too cheap to enter?
…and people wonder why some folks hate politics and will have nothing to do with the sleazy milieu.
Mr Rollman
My argument with you is not that you use anonymous postings. It is that you used City computers for postings that were not work related and in at least one case, that I am aware of, were directly campaign related.
You, in previous posts (or perhaps your interview) said that you used City computers for the postings but “not on City time.” You are on shaky legal ground there, perhaps even into Rene Mansho territory.
There was no reason to be so sloppy and reckless and it did not serve Mufi for you to do so. A smart guy like you could have done all the posting from your own laptop/phone.
I am quite willing to identify myself and say these things to your face. However, the first convenient opportunity is in September. Come to the Tsaiko Tailgate prior to the Colorado game and ask for Lopaka43.
Why is he leaving? Leaving journalism, leaving Hawaii, leaving journalism in Hawaii?
Hope he’s going to teach journalism, if not practice it. He was good.
What a bummer that he is pau.
