More UH management issues

This notice was sent out today, announcing elevator repairs that will leave only one of the three elevators functioning in one of UH Manoa’s major classroom buildings. The elevator outage is expected to last for two days.

Perhaps they didn’t notice that this will be the first week of classes at UH Manoa, always a very busy time.

Meanwhile, the campus has been mostly shut down for the past two weeks.

I guess no one was around to schedule this elevator maintenance when it wouldn’t disrupt students and faculty trying to get two or from class.

I find it interesting that they claim “elevator repair company needs to perform some work in the elevators,” which seems to be a transparently feeble way of attempting to dodge responsibility by the “good ol’ ” Facilities Management Office, which, you know SHOULD be responsible for, ahem, facilities!

On a positive note, “at least one” of the elevators will be operational at these times – maybe even more than one… and more than normal?

…then again, prudence dictates we question the credibility of any organization – even the facile management orifice – that evidently shrinks from even performing its basic duties.

NOT SPAM, I highly suspect that a contractor maintains the elevators, not UH employees. Maybe this is emergent work that can’t be postponed but the parts are not readily available during the semester interim.

Or maybe the UH managers really are just incompetent.

You’re right, it’s likely to be an elevator contractor, not in house staff performing the repairs; but the contract is administered by the Facilities Office, and it’s disingenuous for them to attempt to assign total responsibility on the contractor.

Some other blame game ploys that come to mind that they’ll use:

        1. Need for “Special parts,” as you mention [special herein evidently denotes something they don’t have- that alone makes it special. The fact that they likely SHOULD have it is not to be taken under consideration.]

        2. Age/ condition/ location / ease of access of item(s) to be repaired.

        3. Scope of work/ schedule/ cost. [Usually too much of the 1st, never ’nuff of time or funding.]

        4. “Training.” (or lack thereof).

        5. “Weather.”

        6. Assist trades (for example, electrical). Yep, we’re waiting for those guys!

        7…. “Unions, etc., etc…”
