Serial offender endorses Lingle

An email from Deputy Campaign Manager & Communications Director of the Lingle campaign, Lenny Klompus, hit my In Box Sunday afternoon:

Today the Hawaii Tribune Herald, the Big Island’s largest newspaper, officially endorsed Governor Lingle for Hawaii’s open U.S. Senate seat.

Oh, wait!

Is that the same Hawaii Tribune Herald that the National Labor Relations Board, in a ruling last year, found to have committed multiple violations of federal labor law? Here’s the Newspaper Guild’s summary, as well as the full decision and order from the NLRB.

And the same company that tried to appeal to the federal courts and got slapped down again in a unanimous opinion by a three-judge panel of the D.C. Court of Appeals?

So, let’s rewrite that press release….”Today the Hawaii Tribune Herald, an unapologetic serial violator of federal labor laws, officially endorsed Governor Lingle…”

I’m not sure I would be trumpeting that endorsement.

Didn’t know that about the Hawaii Tribune Herald, Ian. Thanks.

Supporters must be fully aware of an endorser’s background before touting lest they create a trap for their candidate’s campaign.

Thanks, Klompus, for sending Ian the email.

Good golly, the Lingle campaign is touting an endorsement from a newspaper that was found guilty of violating labor laws. Ian thinks that’s a black mark against the Lingle campaign. I think that most union members are bright enough to recognize that guilt by association is not a good way to judge people. But anyway, even if labor union members are as dumb as Ian thinks they are, I doubt that the Lingle campaign will spend much time worrying about losing all the support Lingle was getting from the labor unions. I wonder what the Hirono campaign, and Ian (and the labor unions) would have said if the Hawaii Tribune Herald had endorsed Hirono.

Well, the HTH would never have endorsed Hirono because it is an an anti-union operation. So much for your hypothetical.

More to the point, ‘tho, is that Lingle is touting an endorsement from an entity found to have repeatedly violated the federal laws that she wants to write, and that should be of concern to every household, union or no.

Since you seem to be missing the point, Mr. Conklin, maybe this crude explanation will help you understand it: touting this endorsement is like a desperate prosecutor candidate touting an endorsement from NAMBLA. Get it, yet?

The Trib’s endorsements should have been printed on yellow paper.
Their ah hominem attack on the Mayor, while endorsing Harry Kim, bordered on slander.
Many have speculated on WHY the Trib has been unceasingingly negative towards Kenoi after having previously endorsed him. Occams Razor suggests that since the Mayor hired HTH staff who were part of the labor issue it would examine the timing, vehemence, and irrationality of managements opposition to Kenoi.
The Trib’s endorsement of Kim is a must read…and should have the opposite of its intended effect. It’s similar to the US CoC ads against Mazie, they’re so bad they can’t help but create more support for Hirono.

      Hmmm….need to do a better job editing before I submit. So, to clarify and correct;
Kenoi hired 2 Trib reporters right after his election in ’08, one of whom had been fired and who was appealing(he eventually won.)
The correction is to replace “examine” with “explain” in the above sentence.
