My weekly “Hawaii Monitor” column in Civil Beat yesterday tackled the issue of fundraisers held while the legislature is in session (“Time To Ban Campaign Donations During Session?“).

I’m not 100% against these events. I don’t see them as inherently corrupt or corrupting. But the pretty startling numbers I found when totaling up campaign contributions by at least some top lobbyists did set off lots of my internal alarms.

In the end, I suggest several options to a total ban on session fundraisers that would, I think, limit the opportunity for and appearance of corruption in the process.
