Q: Name this old Honolulu restaurant

A reader posed the following question, which I’m hoping someone out there will be able to answer:

Back in the 70s, there was a plate lunch type place downtown on the waterfront around Smith Street. They specialized in fresh fish and had the menu posted on butcher paper that was hanging in the restaurant.

Do you recall the place?

    Tasty Broiler!
The best: soup, dinner, dessert– for a song!
We used to eat there 3-4 times a week.
Gave them a massive set of Gov. Issue dinnerware that was part of a pallet bid we’d gotten at the old Pearl City auctions. Fond, fond memories…

    Tasty Broiler!!!
Not only was it some of the best local “Mahi plate special” it was a local tradition! A working mans diner and a meeting place for some of Honolulu’s
top business men. I remember “Umi” one of the hardest working ladies who had a sense of “local ways and traditions” …these truly were the good old days
    in Honolulu..

I was introduced to Tasty Broiler circa 1970. You could get an entire meal for $1.65! Succulent mahi – the best I’ve ever had – beverage, watercress salad, veggies, pie, a huge stack of white bread if you wanted (Yes, a hungry workingman’s restaurant!) I moved to SF in 1975, but every time I went back to see my mom I would go there. The last time was in 1985, and I was able to introduce an SF friend who happened to be visiting HNL at the same time to it. He only ate there once, but he still has fond memories. Old Honolulu….

I recall Tasty Broiler offering a steak dinner for about $2.50 in the early 70s…a pretty good deal for a student living on a tight budget.

Tasty Broiler was some kind of place to eat. Meals began with fruit cocktail cup, green salad, entree, and pies for desert. I think I remember steak diners for $1.20. Our family of 7 would be able to have dinner for under $20. The owner/chef was on the staff at rhe Royal Hawaiian Hotel. He was in a photo on the wall with the staff from the Royal Hawaiian. Tasty Broiler was located on Nimitz directly across from the fire boat pier, currently harbor police office.
This place should not be confused with Ala Diner about 2 blocks away next to Nuuanu Stream
