Feline Friday: Wally’s new diet…and more

Ms. Wally Ms. Wally welcomes you to the last Feline Friday of the month. And this time she and the other cats are on time. Barely, if truth be told. Apologies to those who had to wait until Saturday for last week’s feline fix.

But the news this week is that we’ve had a minor breakthrough with Wally. For well over a year, her appetite has been missing. Or, more properly, the connection between her appetite and actually eating has been broken. She acts hungry, but barely touches the food put in front of her. We’ve been through several rounds of tests trying to identify any treatable medical condition, and came up with nothing but more vet bills. And in the meantime, she continues to slowly waste away.

But recently I tried feeding her Hill’s Prescription Diet A/D, a canned food billed as “critical care” food for cats or dogs. It is finely ground and geared to provide needed calories and who knows what else. I add a little water, turning it the consistency of baby food. Then I warm it up a bit. And miraculously she’s been eating it. Not huge amounts, but huge amounts for her. Sometimes it takes some coaxing. Other times I just have to be persistent and offer it up several times until she finally sniffs it and eats.

It’s gone well enough that I bought a case this week to shave off a few pennies a can.

I’m going to be among the people leaving rave reviews online for this product.

Love the picture of “ring around the tuna bowl”…and when I had multiple cats, years ago, and was a tuna fan I’d use water to make the residue go farther so there would be more to go around. I swear cats love even a drop of tuna water!

True. I fed my little darlin’ for most of her 20 years (God how I miss her still!) on reduced sodium canned tuna in water. In her kitten days, it was *the* only food she would/could eat after her innards were damaged when she got hit by a car. Later on, it was because that’s what she loved. And the tuna water was always what she went for first.
