Hard to believe that this spot is just a few minutes walk from downtown Hilo. It’s all part of the area devastated by the 1946 tidal wave, which has remained in open space in anticipation of an eventual repeat. And, luckily, it’s also just a short walk from the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel, where Meda and I spent the weekend.

Actually, the area was rebuilt after the ’46 tidal wave. It was not until the 1959(?) tidal wave that the open space was created by the State and County.

It’s been 30-plus years since my family and I visited the Big Island, with our first stop in Hilo. I very much enjoyed your photo tour of that place.

It was an honor to have Mr. Ian and Ms. Meda in our midst. We had to widen the streets some and put on a few extra police, but so what? it was worth it.
It’s funny how memory works. I spent the first fourteen years of my life in Hilo and don’t remember the rain as a big deal. One of the pluses of the rain is that development proceeds at a more measured pace, if at all.
