Star-Advertiser subscribers now qualify for free WaPo

The Star-Advertiser’s tie-in with the Washington Post appears to be up and functioning, although not without some problems.

Under the terms of the deal between the two newspapers, S-A subscribers qualify for a free subscription to the Post. It’s a great deal.

It’s supposed to be pretty easy. S-A subscribers are supposed to sign in to their accounts, and then just look for the Washington Post tab and follow the instructions.

But a couple of readers emailed me concerning problems.

One reported:

I’ve been trying for several days with no luck. I emailed the SA and tried the method they suggested, go to SA online, log in, go to your account, click on WP tab. But there is no tab. This morning I tried again, no tab. So this time I called their customer service-they were clueless but promised to call back.

BTW I’m trying to get on via my Ipad.

A couple of days later, he sent this follow-up.

I finally got on after a few days and many calls with tech support. Same thing-no tab and then all of a sudden it appeared.

The same thing happened to me. The first couple of times I tried, the tab didn’t appear. Then, on the third try, there it was. A couple of minutes later, I got an email from the Washington Post confirming the free subscription.

You’re all set! You’ve now got 24/7 access to The Washington Post—every story, every feature, every insight—on all digital platforms.

All you have to do now is simply SIGN IN with your registered e-mail address and password to access content on your computer, smartphone and tablet.

We hope you enjoy your 52 weeks of free digital access to the news source that millions of readers and users around the world depend on to better understand their world.

What isn’t clear from the S-A offer is that it is only available to those who subscribe to the print edition. Those with digital-only subscriptions do not qualify.

Still, it is a very good deal and all subscribers should take advantage of it.

Aloha- I found the “only available to print subscribers” curious, too…but I’m “only” an e-subscriber and I had no problems getting on and setting up an account.

I signed up with WAPO on the first day Star-Advertiser made the announcement, and it’s been working fine ever since. Each day I get at least two lists (morning and evening) of clickable links to WAPO news and opinion articles, and I’m empowered to post comments on them although I haven’t done so. The WAPO connection is a great fringe benefit of being a Star-Advertiser subscriber.

Guess what!? I do not subscribe to print either, and was one of those who tried repeatedly to log on. Gave up after four days of trying – and the customer service people telling me that I needed to be a print subscriber.

In this morning’s email – a message from WaPo confirming my unlimited access for 52 weeks. So it’s worth trying to log on more than once . . .

The WP might “intend” to provide SA subscribers wt “24/7 access to The Washington Post—every story, every feature, every insight—on all digital platforms”, but right now they don’t. I have a SA dead tree subscription presently, but can not get the WP Digital Premium subscription on my Kindle, which is ironic because Jeff Bezos controls both the WP and Amazon.

A FAQ on the WP website Help Page refers to this problem:

Q: I have a subscription with a partner newspaper through my Kindle. How do I get my free Washington Post Digital Premium subscription??

A: We currently cannot link a Kindle subscription with our web site access. We hope to implement this feature soon.

…well…I’m glad they made the offer, sorry it’s been complicated for some to get on, and bemused that the offer came a day or two after I ponied up the bucks (of course!) for an annual WAPO digital subscription. Still, it’s good news.
