Throwback Thursday: MidWeek, July 24, 1991

Mid-1991.

I had been publishing my monthly “Hawaii Monitor” newsletter for just over a year, covering the always interesting intersection of money and politics.

Over the course of the year, a number of my stories were picked up by the mainstream media and officially became “news.”

I suppose that’s why I eventually got the call from MidWeek requesting an interview. Later I learned it was to be a cover story.

Note my old Mac Plus in the cover photo, which along with an Apple Laser Printer, made the newsletter possible.

And the bottom photo is one of the unpublished pictures from the MidWeek photo shoot, discovered this week where it had been sitting for years in a file folder. I had hoped at least one of our cats would make it into print. In this picture, I’m holding Mr. Kolo, a somewhat chubby cat with beautiful tabby markings and a stub of a tail. Kolo found us as soon as we bought our house in Kaaawa, coming around for food when we were just spending weekends in the country. We soon had to officially adopt him, the first of the Kaaawa cats to have joined our household over the years, most recently Mr. Romeo.

Ultimately, all intelligent people (whether to the right or the left on the political spectrum) are united by the desire that people think critically and look beneath the surface. Your contributions to this are greatly appreciated.
