Lack of TP closes public restrooms in Waikiki on holiday

Hawaii News Now reported last night that at least three public restrooms on the Natatorium end of Waikiki Beach were closed and locked yesterday on a busy holiday (“Waikiki restrooms closed on holiday“).

HHN reported:

Tourists and locals alike reacted with disbelief.

“We have a bunch of kids with us and we can’t shower them. My sister is pregnant and she can’t even use the bathroom” said Chantelle Noa, who drove in from Kapolei.

“That is embarrassing. I’m glad it doesn’t bother me that much, personally” said Roland Pfeiffer, visiting from Canada.

Hawaii News Now reached out to the Department of Parks and Recreation, but being a holiday, the office was closed. However, multiple sources told Hawaii News Now the closures were because of a lack of toilet paper.

We’re talking restrooms close to the heart of the state’s visitor industry. Forget us mere citizens of the city and county. We’re talking industrial tourism where Hawaii competes in a national and international market, and we can’t keep the restrooms open? Seriously.

And then there’s the question of how problems that come up at 7-day a week facilities like parks can be reported and responded to over the weekend. Another management issue.

I hope that HNN follows up with questions to the mayor about the situation.

Ever the optimist, eh? Sadly HNN would rather giggle its way to another cat video or photo of a plate lunch.

Mayor can host a major press conference in Waikiki and demonstrate his groundbreaking ability to change a toilet paper roll in a public bathroom.

i see at least 1 camera there for the action.

It is just disgraceful that Oahu cannot provide reasonably clean restrooms with toilet paper, paper towels and soap. We have travelled all over the mainland and have rarely seen the conditions that are the rule on Oahu.

Let’s get to the bottom of this toilet paper caper!

HNN did follow up tonight and had somebody confirm that the crapper fiasco was caused by a TP deficit and distinctly un-resourceful staff. But the mayor was nowhere to be seen.

Since Kirk has made so many public promises about polishing Honolulu’s potty house protocol, shouldn’t he help wipe up this mess?

After all, he who makes his thrown shall sit upon it.

Doesn’t any one in the in the Department of Parks and Recreation have any initiative? Why didn’t a supervisor (or someone) go down to Costco and buy a couple of giant packs of TP to keep the restrooms open? They could submit an expense report later. Typical city employee mentality. Give up and go home rather than figure out a way to get the job done and serve the public.

    This is routine neglect.
I was at Kuhio beach bathrooms at 9:30am on Mon Jan 19th, Martin Luther King day…thousands of folks on the streets and the in Kapiolani Park afterwards. But the women’s bathroom was closed all day.
    What incompetence!
And it’s been going on for YEARS. Why do we allow it?
