I asked and tried to answer the same question several times over the years: What are the islands that we could see on clear mornings from the beach in Kaaawa? A 2009 post reviewed a number of past efforts, and offered this photo of those islands from the perspective of Kaaawa (“The view from Kaaawa–What are those islands?“).
I thought that we had figured it out. The high and low ends of Molokai were, I thought, seen on the left, and the gentle, sloping mountain on the right was, I thought, some overlap of the West Maui Mountains and Haleakala.

But then we moved to town, something like 28 miles by road, less if in a straight line, and the perspective on the same neighbor islands is surprisingly different.
The photo below was taken this morning from the Waialae Beach Park, looking over towards Koko Head and beyond. Unfortunately, I was just carrying my iPhone, so there isn’t quite as much detail as my regular camera. But click on this photo to see a full-size version of the image, and you’ll be able to zero in on those islands.
Once again, the question is, what are those islands?

Try a view via Google Earth from the Waialae Beach Park. Or maybe some of you boaters will have some pretty firm views. Share your answers, please.

In the Waialae photo from l to r
1) East Molokai
2) W Molokai
3) West Maui
4) East Maui
(Lanai is not distinct in this photo but would be located below East Maui.)
Still blogging “Online daily from Kaaawa” after “we moved to town, something like 28 miles by road”? I think I’ve figured it out from watching the troubles with Hillary. You’re using a private server buried under the floorboards of your former house.
Isn’t today feline friday? I want the cat report, I have to find out how they’re adjusting!
As far as the islands, I think jks figured it out.
From Sandy Beach looking across on a clear night seeing the lights, I believe we were looking at Molokai. Nice to know island sightings are not only for Hawaii, Maui, Lanai and Molokai.
I say keep it “Online Daily from Kaaawa” just because it never really leaves you.
Many years ago I used some set of topographic maps to plot it for a view of the world as seen from a cave below the Makapuu light. I agree that JKS got it right.
Just found your blog while testing out the Feedly RSS reader app. Love the cat reports – we brought 2 kits to Maui over 7 years back – our oldest is now 19 1/2 still going strong! He’s done 5 moves! I believe I live almost opposite you on Maui – and have some Molokai photos from Kaanapali which mostly match up flipped horizontally – I think you may be seeing a peak of either Puu Kukui or Haleakala behind. Would be please to send them if you are interested.
Every Friday is Feline Friday!
