The Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s website got a major makeover today. Both its look and organization have changed.
The front page includes this editor’s note:
To our readers:
Welcome to the new staradvertiser.com — redesigned throughout to offer an easy-to-read experience with larger photos, videos and graphics.
On the one hand, I’m glad the S-A photographers are getting better play. On the other hand, I’m not sure how I feel about the presentation of the news. The new style seems to deemphasize “hard” news, or maybe fails to convey the idea that the reader looking for hard news should take some time to find it here.
But I’ve only looked at it for a few minutes.
What’s your reaction?

Garbage. The way the pictures constantly zoom in slowly makes me dizzy.
It sucks. I’ve already called in + sent an e-mail. Breaking News requires accessability several times a day.
Star-Advertiser website has never looked better. I?m sure they will continue to tweak it so that it makes more sense to readers, or makes important stuff easier to find. But overall I like the look. I do agree that the zooming image is over-used. Maybe the first or second featured image, but after that, knock it off…it was making me dizzy, too!
Overall I think it is very well done. I like the BIG. I don’t like having to log in repeatedly though. I wonder if that is just a day one bug or something?
The “breathing” images add nothing, and the adjacent headlines are too small to read.
Fail.
Sadly, IMHO, people there think this is a good idea.
P.S. I tried several different browsers. Using Chrome, the type is a bit larger than on Firefox, but it appears that they are displaying it in less than fully black. If so, why? That only makes the text (the “news”) more difficult to read. At least, it looks grey. I didn’t check the CSS to see how it is intended to display.
In a minority here, but I generally like the changes, especially the fact that all of those stupid ads are gone. Also like the larger font & use of white space but agree that the photo zooming should be dropped.
Do you have an ad-blocker? The ads are still there.
Compare it to the CNN site. Looks very similar. Even the adjacent headlines that Larry is complaining about. Dumb CNN people. I’m sure the overhaul was a lot of work and not easy to do. So far the negs seem to be pretty nitpicky. t will tell us all later about human nature and change……
Nah, I’ll let you learn, Georgie. Schools can only do so much.
The SA is similar to recent revamps of State Web pages in moving away from easy to find news or data and towards flashy but empty pictures. I’m less likely to go to the SA page as a result.
You are showing your age Jim. Millennials love the flash and pictures with video.
Too much emphasis on the visuals – but then the print edition of the paper has gone overboard on “art” over the course of several years. Makes it hard to find the “news” – as much of it as they choose to carry. Don’t like it.
More dumbing down. In a dumb way.
Cannot even leave “feedback” since typing does not even work on the site.
I had problems with the feedback yesterday, too, but it worked today.
It’s so bad I am finding it hard to find words that are fit to be published here. It really hurts my eyes on so many levels with an aesthetic reminiscent of the bad mediterraneans lining Kahala Avenue. Just go back to the old design, sans ads. And I vote for the new website redesign to be their question of the day..thumbs up or thumbs down.
I agree with Larry. I sent in similar comments to SA.
